Society of Appalachian Historians
About
The Society of Appalachian Historians was born in 2010 out of the efforts of Richard Starnes and Daniel Pierce as a scholarly working group of Appalachian regional historians. Meeting annually in late May at locations throughout the region, the organization offers advanced students to senior scholars the opportunity to workshop ideas in a collegial academic environment.
The organization does not have a formal structure but is headquartered at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise where Brian McKnight, Jinny Turman, and Lloyd Tomlinson oversee communications, funding, and the planning of the Society’s events. Previously, it was housed at East Tennessee State University under the leadership of Steven Nash and Tom Lee.
Membership
Membership in the Society for Appalachian Historians is open to all. There are no dues and the group is funded through its annual meeting. Regular meeting registration is $40 with a student rate of $10.
