Inclement Weather Policy

November 1, 2018

FROM:  Sandy Huguenin, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
RE:         Weather Related Announcements on Radio and Television

Winter in the mountains often brings bad weather which causes schedule changes for UVa-Wise.  When bad weather strikes, the College may operate on a snow schedule or may cancel classes.  On those days when classes are cancelled, the College will be officially closed and only essential personnel will report for work.  Information about schedule changes will be available from a variety of sources, listed below for your convenience.

Snow Hotline. By calling 376-4SNO (4766), you can hear updated schedule changes 24 hours a day.

UVa-Wise website. An announcement will be posted on the home page by 6:30 a.m.

Radio.  The following radio stations will announce schedule changes.

WAXM 93.5 FM Norton
WDIC 92.1 FM Clinchco
WIFX 94.3 FM Whitesburg, KY
WTFM 98.5 FM Kingsport, TN
WQUT 101.5 FM Johnson City, TN
WSWV 105.5 FM Pennington Gap
WXBQ 96.9 FM Bristol

Television. The following television stations will announce schedule changes.

UVa-Wise Channel 55 / Comcast Wise, VA
WCYB Channel 5 Bristol, VA/TN
WJHL/WKPT Channel 11 Johnson City, TN
WVVA-TV Bluefield, WV

Sometimes weather patterns change very quickly and force us to alter our schedule with little advance notice. In the event of extremely fast-breaking weather, we will send an email to all students and employees, put an announcement on the 376-4SNO number, and we will inform the broadcast stations beginning with these four:

UVa-Wise Channel 55 Wise
WAXM 93.5 FM Norton
WIFX 94.3 FM Whitesburg
WCYB Channel 5 Bristol

We have chosen these stations because they are the most powerful ones in our immediate service area. All commuters should be able to receive one of these stations. Have a safe winter!

Winter weather in the mountains can often necessitate schedule changes.  When severe conditions exist, the decision to alter the class schedule will be made by appropriate administrative offices. An announcement will be made on the College’s telephone snow hot line 376-4SNO and, as well as area radio and television stations at the earliest possible time.

Given the variability of the weather in the Southwest Virginia mountains, there will be occasions when classes will not be canceled even though conditions on some surrounding areas may make travel hazardous. When weather conditions in the immediate area permit classes to be held, the College will be open on a snow schedule. This decision will be made at the earliest possible time and will be announced on the telephone hot line 376-4SNO and regional television and radio stations. The approved snow schedule for classes is as follows:

Definition of Evening Classes – When decisions are made to cancel evening classes because of inclement weather, or other conditions, the classes covered will be those that begin at 5 p.m. or later.

If classes are on a snow schedule on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, then the convocation period is canceled.

Tuesday and Thursday classes on a snow schedule are only 60 minutes in length.

Student safety is of the utmost importance. When the college is operating on a delayed schedule or during any other severe weather conditions such as flooding, commuter students who live outside the Town of Wise corporation limits should use their best judgment about whether it is safe to drive from their homes. These students should not be penalized for missing classes, and they should be extended the same opportunity to make up work as they would be in the case of a delayed schedule due to snow.  Commuter students also should use their best judgment on whether to leave the College early on days when inclement weather strikes during the school day.

Commuter students who live outside the Town of Wise corporation limits who are unable to attend class because of inclement weather are allowed to make up missed academic work. Contact with the professor should occur immediately upon return to class. Residence Hall students and students living within the Town of Wise corporation limits are expected to attend classes when the College is operating on a snow schedule and will not be granted excused absences.
