The University of Virginia’s College at Wise (UVA Wise) is now accepting applications for the 2026 cohort of LEAD SWVA, a regional leadership program focused on strengthening leadership capacity and fostering long-term community development across Southwest Virginia.
LEAD SWVA is a seven-month experiential program that runs from May through November that brings together professionals from the public, private and nonprofit sectors. Through monthly sessions hosted in communities throughout the region, participants engage in leadership development workshops, facilitated discussions and site visits that examine the economic, social and civic dynamics shaping Southwest Virginia.
The program is designed to equip participants with practical leadership skills while deepening their understanding of regional challenges and opportunities. Emphasis is placed on collaboration and systems-level thinking to help participants translate leadership theory into action within their organizations and communities.
A core component of the program is the completion of a capstone service project. These projects are developed in response to real community needs and are intended to produce measurable outcomes, strengthen local partnerships and contribute to regional efforts.
“LEAD SWVA is about investing in people who are committed to Southwest Virginia and want to play an active role in its future,” said Richard Johnson, community development manager at UVA Wise. “By connecting participants with one another and with leaders across the region, the program builds the relationships, skills and shared understanding necessary to drive meaningful, lasting change.”
The announcement follows the successful completion of LEAD SWVA’s inaugural cohort, which graduated in November 2025 at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center. Participants represented a broad cross-section of industries and communities and completed projects addressing priorities such as workforce development, community resources and regional collaboration. The first cohort demonstrated the value of leadership development as a tool for strengthening both individuals and the communities they serve.
Applications for the 2026 LEAD SWVA cohort are now being accepted. Information on eligibility requirements, program costs and application deadlines is available on the LEAD SWVA website.
