UVA Wise 2026 Benefactor of the Year

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise (UVA Wise) recognized its 2026 Benefactor of the Year on Saturday in celebration of exceptional generosity and the lasting difference philanthropy makes for students.

While the honoree’s identity will remain private, the impact of their generosity reflects a larger truth at UVA Wise: every gift is an investment in students and their futures.

Gifts to UVA Wise support students in many ways, from scholarships and academic programs to undergraduate research, study abroad, student organizations, athletics, the arts and campus experiences. Annual giving also provides resources to meet emerging student needs and strengthen the overall college experience.

“Every gift, regardless of the amount, can change a student’s life,” said Valerie Lawson, vice chancellor of advancement and alumni engagement. “Large and small gifts provide incredible scholarship support, create pathways for students to participate in undergraduate research or study abroad and improve facilities and grounds. Most importantly, they let students know they are worth investing in.”

The impact of giving extends well beyond the original contribution. A scholarship can remove a financial barrier for a student. Support for an academic program can create a transformative learning opportunity. Investments in student life can help students build connections, confidence and a sense of belonging.

“Scholarships are more than financial support, they are doors of opportunity. They give students the chance to pursue a degree, attract the best and brightest to our college, and create pathways for students to learn beyond the classroom,” adds UVA Wise Chancellor Donna P. Henry.

The Benefactor of the Year recognition is not simply about the size of a gift. It represents a belief in the potential of UVA Wise students and the communities they will ultimately serve.

“UVA Wise extends a deep gratitude for this extraordinary donor,” Lawson said. “Their generosity speaks volumes about their belief in what is possible when we invest in our students and their future.”
