UVA Wise Names 2026 Volunteers of the Year
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise (UVA Wise) has named Rhonda Perkins, Charles Lawson and Don Green as its 2026 Volunteers of the Year, recognizing their dedication to the College and its students.
Rhonda Perkins: A Lifelong Cavalier and Champion for Students
A 1973 UVA Wise graduate, Rhonda Perkins has remained actively involved with her alma mater for more than four decades. She began serving on the Alumni Board in the 1980s and has served as Alumni Board president and a member of the College Board.
Perkins has witnessed many milestones in UVA Wise history, including the launch of football, the College’s name change and the development of the David J. Prior Convocation Center and graduate programs.
“Being a part of these milestones has been remarkable,” Perkins said. “I am thankful for the opportunity to see our college grow and our students excel.”
As a first-generation college graduate, Perkins said she is especially grateful for the educational opportunity UVA Wise provided her.
Charles Lawson: Investing in the Future
Charles Lawson has been involved with UVA Wise for three years and serves as treasurer of the UVA Wise Foundation. A 1988 graduate of Virginia Tech, Lawson has embraced the opportunity to support an institution he believes is vital to the region.
“The friendships I have made and feeling that I am contributing to an institution that is essential to the economic future of this community” are among the most meaningful aspects of his service,” Lawson said.
He particularly enjoys seeing the College expand its academic programs and resources for students and staff.
Don Green: A Cavalier Who Helped Shape History
Don Green has maintained a connection to UVA Wise for 67 years. A 1961 graduate, he has served 24 years on the UVA Wise Foundation Board and participated in two capital campaigns.
One of his most memorable contributions came during the College’s transition from Clinch Valley College to the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
“I feel like this was a significant change for the college and gave us world-wide recognition it deserved,” Green said.
Through decades of service, Green has helped support the College during periods of significant growth and transformation.
“Our volunteers of the year represent the very best of what it means to be a Highland Cavalier,” UVA Wise Chancellor Donna P. Henry said. “Their generosity, commitment and belief in the transformative power of education have helped open doors for our students and strengthen our college and our region. We are deeply grateful for the many ways they have given of their time, talents and hearts to UVA Wise.”
