Remote Teaching
Remote teaching is broadly defined as any teaching/meeting/consultation with students that is conducted outside the physical classroom. It is permitted only for faculty who meet UVA Wise credentials for remote teaching and in courses designed explicitly to be hybrid or remote. This designation should be noted in the course description.
Remote teaching is NOT an alternative or option for faculty teaching classes that have been designated as face-to-face (F2F). UVA Wise expects faculty to teach in the mode they are assigned, and students expect and deserve consistency in delivery.
All faculty should be mindful of the College's expectation of regular attendance (See Section 4.10.4.1 in the Faculty Handbook) and meet their contract obligation for instructional delivery in the mode, days, and times specified in the course description. Absences from in-person classes do not justify a move to remote teaching and hybrid and remote modalities do not justify teaching absences.
All UVA Wise Faculty are expected to be active and engaged on campus, which requires a physical presence on campus regardless of course delivery mode. See Faculty Handbook Section 4.1.4 below:

Remote teaching requires a faculty member to 1) be credentialed in advance by UVA Wise to teach remotely and 2) either be assigned to a remote or hybrid course or have the prior permission of the Chair.
STEP 1: Remote Ready Credentialing
If you are interested in teaching online in the future, you will need to get specific online training from
Online Learning Consortium Online Learning Consortium (OLC) - Enhancing Remote Learning
or
- Quality Matters Home | Quality Matters.
Contact Sabrina Qureshi for more information on the specific training requirements and this policy.
Step 2: Chair and HR Approval
Having the remote-ready credential does NOT grant faculty the ability to move classes online at their discretion.
Unless a Faculty member has been assigned a hybrid or remote course modality, they must request approval for remote teaching in advance from the Chair and obtain any necessary HR approvals.

AI Resources
UVA Wise requires a clear AI policy in your classes that makes every attempt to clarify precisely where AI can and cannot be used in your assignments. Sample policies from multiple faculty at UVA Wise are linked below.
No AI checker is a smoking gun, and charges of plagiarism with AI are nearly impossible to prove. When in doubt, CAFE suggests inviting the student into your office to talk privately about their work and how it was produced. Many students are unaware that Grammarly and other grammar checker sites are now AI-driven and may not be ethical in some uses. This can be a great teaching moment for them and you.
UVA offers a wonderful Getting Started with Generative AI guide as well as an online course, Teaching in a World with Generative AI in Canvas, which you can take at any time. MLA and CCCC recommend the use of drafts as the single best preventative measure to avoid AI plagiarism in writing, as you can easily track the organic evolution of an assignment. Making assignments uniquely specific or personal to your course materials and discussions, requiring AI checks by students, and in-class assignments all help avoid AI usage, but the best way to make students ethical is to teach them where and how AI can be useful in preliminary research, pre-writing including brainstorming, and as a structural model for basic paragraph development, but also not helpful due to inaccuracies in interpreting and assessing sources including programming hallucinations, lack of application and nuanced understanding of complex topics.
Be aware that since AI can't easily be proven, charges can create a hostile environment over unprovable accusations, so tread carefully and check with your Chair before making any accusations. When you need to do so, try to be calm and respectful to students and have these conversations privately, as you should when addressing any personal issue with a student.
