When Disaster Strikes UVA Wise Alumnus Responds

When disaster strikes in Southwest Virginia, UVA Wise alumnus Micah Nida doesn’t hesitate. He shows up with what he knows best: a hot, freshly cooked meal and a heart to serve.
Nida, owner of The Cluck Truck, has been providing free meals to flood victims and storm-impacted communities across the region since Tropical Storm Helene hit in September. From serving Wise County residents during extended power outages to traveling to Damascus, Hurley and most recently Dante, Nida has remained committed to showing up when his neighbors need him most.
“I’ve always felt led to give back to this community,” Nida said. “This region has given so much to my business, and I believe it’s our responsibility to care for one another during hard times. For me, that starts with a fresh meal.”
Nida launched The Cluck Truck in July 2022, and his business has continued to grow thanks to strong community support. He is now preparing to expand, with a second trailer set to launch next month as the first step in building a regional chain of food trucks.
He credits part of his approach to service to his time at UVA Wise. He says philosophy and ethics courses taught by UVA Wise Associate Professor of Philosophy Anthony Cashio helped refine his moral compass and shape the person he is today.
Micah’s story is a powerful example of how UVA Wise graduates continue to serve and uplift the region that shaped them.
