For many first-generation college students, the path to higher education can feel uncertain and overwhelming. For one student at the University of Virginia's College at Wise (UVA Wise), that path was made more attainable through involvement in TRIO programs.

Beginning as a freshman in high school, Grace Elam from Castlewood, Va., joined an Upward Bound TRIO program designed to prepare students for college success. Through academic enrichment and college readiness support, the program staff helped Elam develop strong writing skills for essays and resumes, aided with her scholarship applications and organized college her campus visits. For Elam and others, those early experiences play a critical role in the students’college acceptance process and confidence in pursuing higher education.

“TRIO became an essential source of guidance and support,” Elam shared. “It helped me understand not just how to succeed academically, but how to navigate college as a first-generation student. Because of TRIO, I’ll be graduating in May with Bachelor of Science in Nursing.”

Elam’s support also extended beyond the classroom with her stepping into leadership roles within the program, first serving as a freshman mentor for Student Support Services and later as a Resident Advisor for the UVA Wise Upward Bound TRIO Program. These opportunities provided both professional development and financial assistance to help cover living expenses.

“TRIO represents more than academic assistance. It represents opportunity, empowerment and the belief that college is attainable,” says Whitney Wells, who works in TRIO Student Support Services and serves as the director of disability services at UVA Wise.

As graduation approaches, Elam reflects on a journey shaped not only by coursework and campus involvement, but also by mentorship and advocacy. From high school preparation to undergraduate leadership, TRIO programs have provided the skills, confidence and support necessary for success during and beyond college.

This February 28, UVA Wise celebrates the 40th annual National TRIO Day, a day to honor student success, community service and the power of educational opportunity. UVA Wise has two TRIO programs that have been on campus for over 50 years, opening doors, strengthening communities and building pathways to college and careers for millions.
