Generations of Cavalier Pride
For Emily Houchins Bush, the walkways of UVA Wise are more than just the backdrop of her college years, they’re the foundation of a multigenerational story, now also being written by her daughter, Annie. This mother-daughter duo shares more than a family bond, they share a legacy rooted in education, growth and Cavalier pride.
Emily, a 2006 graduate of the College, remembers her time at UVA Wise as transformative. A shy high school student, she found her confidence on campus. Whether she was cheering on the sidelines as a member of the cheer team, bonding with her sisters in Phi Sigma Sigma, or spending time with friends in residence hall lounges (despite being a commuter), college life helped Emily step into herself.

Double majoring in psychology and liberal arts and sciences with a concentration in elementary education, and even adding a history minor, Emily embraced her academic journey with purpose. Professors like Rachel Tighe, Cindy Wilkey and Brian McKnight helped shape her perspective, each making a lasting impression in their own way.
Today, she puts both of her degrees to use as a school counselor at J.W. Adams Combined School in Wise County, a career she’s proudly built over the last 19 years. “It’s the best of both worlds,” Emily says. “UVA Wise prepared me so well, I was hired right out of college.”
Now, her daughter Annie is walking the same campus paths, with a vision all her own.
Annie is pursuing a degree in nursing with hopes of becoming a nurse practitioner specializing in dermatology. A recipient of the prestigious Carl W. Smith Bicentennial Scholarship, Annie chose UVA Wise not only for its outstanding nursing program but also because of how close to home it feels, both literally and emotionally.

From Homecoming to STEM-H events and athletic competitions, Annie is diving into campus life while keeping her academic goals front and center, gaining skills she’ll carry for a lifetime.
The choice to follow in her mother’s footsteps was a natural one.
“As an alumnus of UVA Wise, I know what an incredible education my daughter will receive,” Emily says. “It’s close to home, the education is top-notch, and by living on campus she still gets the true college experience.”
The family’s bond to the College runs deep, and their story reflects what makes UVA Wise so unique: a strong sense of tradition and community.
“Campus has changed so much since I was here,” Emily notes. “There are new dorms, a new library and an amazing nursing building. But what hasn’t changed is the welcoming atmosphere and the quality of education.”
As Annie continues her college journey, she’s not just following a family tradition, she’s also creating her own legacy within it. She’s excited, focused and ready for the next four years, all while carrying a proud title.
“I’m so glad UVA Wise has given me the opportunity to further my education debt-free,” Annie says. “I love being a part of this small-knit community and having one-on-one teaching experiences. I’m blessed to be a legacy student.”
The story of Emily and Annie reminds us all that some legacies aren’t just passed down, they’re lived, shared and expanded across generations. At UVA Wise, a new chapter is always waiting to be written.
