The University of Virginia's College at Wise (UVA Wise) has launched a new major in finance, expanding its business curriculum to prepare students for careers in corporate finance, banking, investments and financial planning.

The program combines coursework in business administration, financial management, business analytics and data-driven decision-making with experiential learning opportunities, including internships, undergraduate research, community engagement and study abroad.

"Finance is one of the fastest growing and most dynamic fields in business," said Gurkan Akalin, professor of business analytics and chair of the business and economics department. "The finance major at UVA Wise helps students connect classroom learning to real-world financial decisions, from understanding the stock market to exploring real estate, banking, investments, corporate finance and financial planning with advanced tools in business analytics and artificial intelligence."

The major is 60 credit hours and includes courses in corporate finance, investment analysis, money and financial markets, global finance, blockchain and derivatives, accounting and business ethics. Students will develop skills in financial analysis, technology, global markets and strategic business decision-making.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in business and financial occupations is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2034, with nearly 1 million job openings expected each year. The agency reports a median annual wage of more than $80,000 for business and financial occupations.

Graduates are prepared to contribute to organizational success and regional economic development especially within Southwest Virginia and the greater Appalachian economy while remaining adaptable to emerging fields such as fintech, blockchain and digital assets.

The major will be available this fall. For more information about the finance major, please reach out to business@uvawise.edu.
