The University of Virginia’s College at Wise (UVA Wise) is proud to announce Lucy Cunliffe, a mathematics major with a concentration in data science, as the inaugural recipient of the Robert F. Stallard Fellowship in STEM.

Established by Jeannie A. and Robbie F. Stallard, the Stallard Fellowship supports outstanding students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics at UVA Wise. The fellowship aims to empower high-achieving students by providing research opportunities that lay the groundwork for advanced study and meaningful contributions to their fields.

Cunliffe, an international student from England and a member of the UVA Wise tennis team, is pursuing a mathematics major with minors in exercise science and philosophy. She plans to attend graduate school to earn a master’s degree and Ph.D. in mathematics, with the goal of becoming a college professor and researcher.

“I’m incredibly honored and excited to receive the Stallard Fellowship,” said Cunliffe. “This opportunity allows me to explore research in computational fluid dynamics, apply the theory I’ve learned throughout my undergraduate studies, and grow as a confident researcher and presenter. I hope the conclusions from my work can make a true difference in the field.”

Cunliffe's research project focuses on mathematical modeling in computational fluid dynamics (CFD), a subject that aligns closely with donor Robbie Stallard’s own academic background.

"I am eager to see the outcome of Lucy's project and the impact of the Stallard Fellowship," said Stallard, who has a strong interest in mathematical modeling and thrilled about the direction of Cunliffe’s work.

“Lucy’s research is precisely the kind of high-level, practical application of mathematics that we hoped to support through this fellowship,” said Chancellor Donna P. Henry. “We are deeply grateful to the Stallards for investing in the academic future of our students and region.”

A dedicated scholar-athlete, Cunliffe is a member of Sigma Zeta, the national science and mathematics honor society and the Darden Society. She has consistently been recognized on the Dean’s List and continues to excel both academically and athletically.

Cunliffe’s passion for mathematics emerged in high school and has grown through her time at UVA Wise. “Math challenges me to solve problems in creative ways,” she said. “It helps me understand how the world works and gives me a powerful tool to make an impact.”

Cunliffe’s long-term goal is to become a college professor, conducting research, publishing and mentoring students just as her professors at UVA Wise have mentored her.

The Stallard Fellowship is part of a broader initiative to expand research support and academic excellence in STEM fields at UVA Wise. “We hope this will be the first of many such fellowships,” said Chancellor Henry. “They are vital to fostering innovation, excellence and opportunity for our students.”
