The listening session was one of several visits Youngkin made Wednesday to the region to hear from community leaders on a broad range of key economic, health and workforce issues.

Melissa Cook, a John I. Burton High School guidance counselor and 1989 graduate of UVA Wise, is the 31st recipient of the award, which recognizes a local citizen leader who has advanced the cause of education in Wise County.

Danville Public Schools announced Michelle Guzman as the DPS Teacher of the Year. Guzman, who majored in mathematics and minored in leadership studies and education, cites the College as the place where the foundation was laid for her teaching journey.

“We know that one of the biggest concerns for students and families is how they will pay for college and we know this is the time when students are making their top choice,” UVA Wise Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management Jeffrey Baylor said.

Johnson has a decade of experience as a provost and a passion for helping students and families appreciate the value of a liberal arts education.

Kingsolver won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her book, “Demon Copperhead.” The book is set in nearby Lee County at the onset of the opioid epidemic, and is a modern interpretation of Charles Dickens' “David Copperfield.”

Lilly Meade, a UVA Wise junior, is not only a full-time student, but is a triple major in sociology, criminal justice and accounting with a minor in psychology. Meade credits the UVA Wise’s TRIO programs for getting her where she is today.
