New Student Checklist
First Things First
After being admitted, all new and readmitted undergraduate students complete the following steps:
1. Reply to your Offer of Admission
Log in to your applicant portal to accept your admissions decision.
2. Complete Verification
If you are a Virginia resident or ARC-eligible student, the required form is linked in your applicant portal. Students will be unable to register for classes until the form and any supporting documents are received and processed by the Office of Admissions.
- Summer/fall semester start: Return the completed form and any supporting documents prior to your Orientation session.
- Spring semester start: Return the completed form and any supporting documents prior to your advising and class registration appointment.
3. Activate your UVA Wise Account
Activate your UVA Wise student account (separate from your applicant portal) to gain access to UVA Wise systems, including the My UVA Wise Portal, your UVA Wise email, and the pre-Orientation Cav Module.
Starting in January, admitted students will receive directions from identity@virginia.edu to their personal email (be sure to check your spam/junk/promotions folders) with their computing ID/username, activation code/Jenzabar Student ID, and an activation link to set up a first-time account password. After activation, be sure to keep a secure record of your account information for access to UVA Wise systems.
Visit help.uvawise.edu for account tips and frequently asked questions. Students can reset their password at any time using the Account Maintenance & Password Reset option in the Quick Menu of the My UVA Wise Portal (hyperlinked under the key icon).
4. Check your UVA Wise Email
After activating your account, check and use your UVA Wise email often and regularly for all college communications and business—it is your official college email account.
To access your UVA Wise email, click on the Campus WebMail option in the Quick Menu of the My UVA Wise Portal (hyperlinked under the envelope icon). Students log in to their UVA Wise Outlook email inbox using their computing ID/username + @virginia.edu and password. Then, select Outlook from the list of available apps.
Only use the @virginia.edu domain when logging into your email account. You will send and receive mail from your official UVA Wise email address, which is your computing ID/username + @uvawise.edu.
Visit help.uvawise.edu for account tips and frequently asked questions.
5. Apply for Financial Aid
Check the Financial Aid tab in the My UVA Wise Portal (login required) for updates or needed Financial Aid Office information, including the online FAFSA and any required verification items.
6. Apply for On-Campus Housing
Complete the online UVA Wise Housing Application (login required) if you plan to reside on campus. UVA Wise has a first-year residency requirement for all first-year students except those who are residents of Wise Co./City of Norton, married, or over 25 years of age.
- Summer/fall semester start: The Housing Application process opens to new summer/fall students in April.
- Spring semester start: The Housing Application process opens to new spring students in October.
7. Complete your Pre-Entrance Health Packet
Download and submit the required Pre-Entrance Health Packet to the UVA Wise Health Clinic. Please do not delay completing the form as it requires updated immunization information and the signature of a health care professional.
- Summer/fall semester start: The Pre-Entrance Health Packet is due by August 1.
- Spring semester start: The Pre-Entrance Health Packet is due by January 2.
8. Submit Official, Final Transcripts and Test Scores

Course credit cannot be added to your academic record until official transcripts and scores have been received and evaluated.
9. Apply for TRIO Student Support Services
If interested, explore and submit an online application for TRIO Student Support Services, which provides free academic support to UVA Wise students who are first-generation college students, have limited income, and/or have a disability.
Note: While students can apply to TRIO Student Support Services at any time, it is recommended that students apply prior to attending Orientation so that they can complete the advising and course registration process with their TRIO/SSS Academic Advisor.
Orientation & Advising
All new and readmitted undergraduate students who have been away for more than one academic year complete the following steps prior to the beginning of the semester in which they intend to enroll:
1. Complete your Cav Module
Use your UVA Wise computing ID/username and password to log into and complete the online pre-Orientation Becoming a Cav Module. The Cav Module provides an introduction to essential UVA Wise systems, processes, and information. The Cav Module must be completed prior to signing up for an Orientation session.
- Summer/fall semester start: Students who have accepted their offer of admission will receive access to the Cav Module in their applicant portal in mid-March.
- Spring semester start: Students who have accepted their offer of admission will receive access to the Cav Module in their applicant portal in mid-October.
Note: Students enrolling in an online transfer program follow a separate Orientation process. Students enrolling in 2+2 Business Online, 2+2 Criminal Justice Online (coming soon), or A2B Education Online will receive access to an online transfer module in their applicant portal in early April (summer/fall start) and November (spring start). Students enrolling in RN to BSN Online will receive information about completing an online module from the Nursing Department.
2. Attend Orientation
All new undergraduate students and readmitted students (who have been away for more than one academic year) are required to attend an Orientation session to learn more about UVA Wise resources, meet fellow new Cavs and family, and take care of new student items.
Summer/fall semester start: Students who have completed the Cav Module will receive access to sign up for an Orientation session in their applicant portal in mid-April. New student advising follows summer Orientation sessions, so students should choose an Orientation session where they can also commit to attending a virtual advising appointment later in the same calendar week.
Students enrolling for summer classes should sign up for an Orientation session that is prior to the start of the summer term in which they plan to enroll (see the Academic Calendar for semester start dates), so that they may register for both summer and fall courses with their Academic Advisor.
- Spring semester start: Students who have completed the Cav Module will receive access to sign up for Spring Orientation in their applicant portal in November.
Note: Attendance at an Orientation session is optional for students enrolling in an online transfer program (RN to BSN Online, 2+2 Business Online, 2+2 Criminal Justice Online (coming soon), and A2B Education Online) and for readmitted students who have been away for less than one academic year. These students can email orientation@uvawise.edu to sign up for an Orientation session according to the start timelines above.
3. Register for Classes with your Academic Advisor
Following Orientation session attendance, students register for their first UVA Wise classes by completing the Wise Orientation Welcome (WOW) Course. In this course, students sign up for a virtual one-on-one advising appointment with their New Student Academic Advisor during available new student advising days. More information and specific dates are provided to students in the Cav Module.
- Summer/fall semester start: Students receive access to complete the WOW course and schedule their virtual advising appointment after attending an Orientation session.
- Spring semester start: Students receive access to complete the WOW course and schedule their virtual advising appointment after signing up for Spring Orientation. New spring students will schedule and complete advising prior to attending the Spring Orientation session.
Note: Online transfer programs students (RN to BSN Online, 2+2 Business Online, 2+2 Criminal Justice Online (coming soon), and A2B Education Online) will NOT complete the WOW course. They will receive direct email communications for course registration after completing their online transfer module and submission of final transcripts confirming program eligibility. Readmitted students who have been away for less than a year do NOT complete the WOW course and will receive direct email communications for course registration.

In addition to apparel, snacks and other retail items, the UVA Wise Bookstore offers textbooks for purchase (and some titles for rent) prior to the start of each semester.
In most classes, students may use their preferred supplies for notetaking and studying (e.g., binder, notebook, etc.). Any other specific requirements will be shared by the instructor on the first day of class and/or in the syllabus available in Canvas just before classes begin.
4. Plan for Semester-Start Dates and Events
The start of the each semester includes a variety of events, including Move-in Day for residential students, and in fall semester -- Expedition (required for freshmen; highly encouraged for transfers), and Welcome Week activities for all students. Review the Academic Calendar and regularly check for communications in your UVA Wise email to ensure you receive important dates and details for the start of the semester.
